On September 6, 2025, a bomb explosion shattered the Kohsar Cricket Playground in Bajaur district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, during a cricket match, leaving the local community in disbelief. Reports indicate that the blast claimed the life of a man named Fazlullah, while several others, including a young child, sustained injuries.
Casualties and Immediate Response
The incident took place on a Saturday afternoon when the playground was filled with players and spectators. According to Waqas Rafique, a police officer in Bajaur, the attack was deliberate and involved multiple improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Eyewitnesses described the explosion as powerful, causing panic among those present.
Investigation Underway
Authorities confirmed that Fazlullah was the sole fatality, while the injured were transported to a local hospital for treatment and are currently being monitored. Security forces promptly arrived at the scene to secure the area and initiated an investigation into the IEDs' origins and construction. Police disclosed that the explosives had been buried prior to the arrival of the crowd.
Potential Militant Involvement
As of now, no militant group has taken responsibility for the bombing. Bajaur, which shares a border with Afghanistan, has experienced numerous terrorist attacks historically. The region is notorious for the presence of banned groups like Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Before the incident, local tribes had issued warnings against terrorists and their supporters, threatening to demolish homes aiding militants and impose hefty fines. Bajaur, one of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's seven tribal districts, has been a focal point for militant activities due to its proximity to Afghanistan's Kunar province. Attacks targeting security personnel, government officials, and peace committees have been common. Despite recent military operations against the TTP, negotiations with local councils have not produced significant outcomes, highlighting the persistent security issues in the region.
